As you go about your day today, it is important to know that Jesus is standing next to you. He sees every single thing you do. He sees every single thing you should do, but fail to. He knows everything you are thinking. He knows the reasons why you do what you do. He is right there with you all day long.
For the Christian who has any self-awareness of their sin, the thought of Jesus being with them throughout the day probably causes more anxiety than joy. In fact, I can’t think of anything more terrifying than knowing that the God who hates sin is at my side all day, every day. So what is so good about Jesus being at your side all day? Let me tell you.
“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” Romans 10:4
Jesus did not come to earth so that He could stand over your shoulder and say, “Really? You are going to do that while I AM standing right here?” Jesus came to earth to stand by your side and fulfill the law perfectly in your place and to die the death that you and I deserve so that we could have His righteousness. Jesus didn’t come to earth to be a role model. He came to earth to live the perfect life that we were supposed to, but couldn’t because of our sin! When we put our faith in Him, we receive His perfect life record and are treated by the Father as if it were us that lived perfectly! We no longer obey God in order to get into heaven, but obey Him because we are already citizens of heaven.
When we understand that Jesus is not merely an example for our lives, but ultimately the fulfiller of our lives, we will fall at His feet and worship. So instead of seeing Jesus at your side intimidating you into holiness, see Him at your side obeying the law perfectly in your place. Because of Jesus’ perfect life, He was able to go to the cross as the spotless sacrifice and take on the wrath that you and I deserve for our sins. Jesus is no longer at my side pointing out my sins, but at my side covering my sins.
As you go about your day today with Jesus at your side, dwell on this:
-When you woke up too late this morning to spend time with the Father in prayer, Jesus rose early before the sun came up and prayed perfectly to the Father on your behalf.
-When you continue to fail your spouse because of your selfishness, the One who never failed anyone is at your side, going to the cross to destroy the curse of selfishness for you.
-When you lie to your coworker today in order to make yourself sound more legit, Jesus is next to you telling the complete truth even though it cost Him His life.
-When you disobey your parents again because you think you know better than they do, Jesus obeyed His earthly mother and father perfectly even though He was God in the flesh.
-When you take that extra bite of food that you told yourself you shouldn’t, Jesus is next to you completing His 40 day fast in your place.
-When you look at that man or woman and begin to play out a fantasy in your head, Jesus is next to you saying ‘no’ to every single temptation that He ever faced so that you could be saved.
-When you lose your temper today and say things that you regret, Jesus is next to you forgiving His enemies perfectly because you couldn’t.
-When you do something great today and are puffed up with pride, Jesus is next to you washing the filthy feet of his disciples in perfect humility on your behalf.
This is the good news of the Gospel. While I fail all day long, Jesus has already lived the perfect life in my place so that the Father would love me and save me. Jesus’ perfect life ended with His brutal death on the cross. He took on the sins of the world, so that we could take on His perfect life through faith. But on the third day He rose from the dead. This is why He can walk with you. He is not dead, but alive.
Jesus is next to you today doing all the things you should, and refusing to do all the things you shouldn’t. He isn’t shaking His head in disgust, but happily persevering because of His great love for you. It is only when we get this will we be freed to love Him and serve Him selflessly.
